National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF)
Grants for Jimi Lott Scholarship fund
Grants for Undergrads & Grads in Print and Television Photojournalism

The National Press Photographers Foundation was founded in 1976 to improve
and facilitate the administration of press photography, to promote the study of
press photography and research therein and to continue the education of press
photographers by publishing and distributing addresses, reports and other
literary works on press photography subjects. Now the NPPF, a non-profit
foundation with 501(c)(3) tax exemption under the IRS Code, is charged with
advancing press photography in all its branches and awarding scholarships and
fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in
the field of photojournalism.

NPPF scholarship awards are given to encourage those who have talent and
dedication to photojournalism and who need financial help to continue their
studies. These awards are directed toward those who are already studying full
time in college or who are returning to college to finish their formal education.
One scholarship is reserved exclusively for a photojournalist pursuing an
advanced degree. This scholarship program is administered by the National
Press Photographers Foundation, a foundation associated with the National
Press Photographers Association. Separately, the Foundation administers and
funds the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop in June of each year, the
Airborne TV Seminar in December and the Awards for Research in
Photojournalism. The Foundation assists in funding the Flying Short Course
and other educational programs. These programs are primarily aimed at those
already in the profession. Program details and dates are publicized in News
Photographer magazine.

All applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in a four-year college or
university, or have been accepted at a four-year institution to complete
suspended studies. Applicants must provide evidence of an aptitude for
photojournalism as well as academic ability and financial need. A letter from a
college instructor or intern supervisor would be highly supportive and
strengthen an applicant's appeal. A person may apply for as many different
scholarships as he or she chooses; however only one award will be granted.
The award must be used at the beginning of the next semester.
Be sure to read the general rules for all NPPF scholarships.

Deadline
The deadline for all scholarships is early March .

A portfolio is required with each entry. For still photographers, six or more
photos (a picture story counts as one) in the easiest form (8 x 10 unmounted
prints or preferably, 35mm duplicate slides inserted in an 8 x 10 plastic sleeve).
Picture editors must send three tearsheets. Video journalists should submit a
tape of three short, but complete, stories. A digital portfolio may be submitted.
See technical details in the general rules for all NPPF scholarships.
GPA
A student's grade point average is required as an indication that applicant can
successfully complete college studies.
Financial need Each application must demonstrate financial need with an
explanation on the application form. Each scholarship requires its own
application, portfolio and letters of recommendation. The application form may
be photocopied.

worked at The Seattle Times from 1984 to 2004.

newspaper journalism. The scholarship is open to those enrolled in a
recognized four-year college or university with a major in journalism or
communications and an emphasis on photography.

The scholarship is managed by the NPPA, a nonprofit foundation with 501(c)(3)
status. To learn more about the NPPA, visit the association's Web site at www.

Young Menswear Association (www.yma.com)
The YMA Scholarship / Grant Committee has established a summer internship
program for selected YMA scholars - The YMA Intern Program. This program
has as its goal - to bring talented above average student scholars into the
industry, to have them experience a real industry environment and to allow them
to establish a work presence that will lead to career opportunities upon their
graduation.

This program is an extension of the successful YMA Scholarship / Grant
program. The program is directed toward YMA scholars that have expressed an
interest to intern with participating YMA companies as expressed on their
Scholarship Interest form.

The program considers student scholar candidates that are juniors and will be
entering their senior year. The program is designed to dovetail with the current
YMA Scholars program in offering summer work experience between a scholar's
junior and senior school year. To be considered for this internship program, the
Student Scholar must a first selected by the YMA Scholarship / Grant committee
for a YMA Scholarship/Grant.

Once a YMA Scholar has been selected and they have expressed an interest to
serve as an intern, their information will be submitted to an interested YMA
supporting company for consideration. If a YMA Scholar is selected to work as
an intern, the scholar will be subject to the rules and consideration of the
participating YMA supportive company. YMA Scholar interns are to be
compensated in accordance to the company's standard compensation policy for
summer interns. Our program intends for YMA Scholars to be compensated.
YMA Intern candidates would have to fulfill the requirements normally necessary
to become an intern at a YMA supporting company. Our hope is that the talent
and interest level represented by a YMA Scholar would exceed expectations.
Scholarship Applications are  due to schools on December 1  Internships are
announced early April.
